Bullying Teen Town Hall

My platform is called Kayla's Heroes. It is an anti-bullying and conflict resolution program designed to help children learn how to S.T.A.M.P out bullies.

S.T.A.M.P. stands for
Stay away from bullies
Tell someone
Avoid bad situations
Make friends
Project confidence.

My program has seen a lot of success with elementary school students because it is fast paced and interactive. But in the last six months it has become my mission to figure out how to translate this wildly important message into a pertinent topic for high school students. I was recently invited to take part in a Teen town hall to discuss bullying in an open forum. I was part of a panel of experts including counselors, educators, police officers and other prominent members of the Fort Worth community.

The most influential person to me at this appearance was a young woman who spoke up right at the close of discussion. I could tell there was something she desperately wanted to say, but it was tough for her. Once she worked up her courage, here is the story she shared with us:

"Hi everyone. I'm so glad to have had the opportunity to participate in
this discussion. When they say to tell someone, it could be the
most important thing you could do. A few years ago I was teased relentlessly
because I cared about my grades and my future. I did not wear
the fancy clothes and shoes that everyone was wearing and I soon found myself
on the outside. The bullying threw me into a deep depression, and I was starting to
have suicidal thoughts. I told my friends and my parents, and without their help,
love, and support I would not be standing here today. If there is one thing I can tell
you, you MUST talk to your parents. Its vital to our survival."

This appearance changed my life and my view of bullying.

Bat Boy

After completing my role as Annie in Annie Get Your Gun, I started a new theatrical project: Bat Boy the Musical. It was a great show where I played two roles, Ruthie Taylor and Mayor Maggie.

This show was unique because it really gave me an opportunity to work on my acting more than my singing. I was forced to take on a "serious" character (meaning I was not the comedic relief like I usually am). My director ran the show as if we were working in New York. I really appreciated that kind of expectation, because it gets you used to what the real world is like. I am extremely thankful for this opportunity and I cannot wait until my next show!

Annie Get Your Gun

I had the distinct honor of bringing to life on of the most memorable characters on the musical stage. In December I was cast as Annie Oakley in Annie Get Your Gun at the Art Centre Theatre. I was thrilled beyond belief to be cast as the leading lady. This was my very first lead role in all of my years involved with the theatre. Lets just say I have been bit by the theatre bug again and I am loving every minute of it.

FINALE! There's No Business Like Show Business
After completing this show I have come to realize that my dream of making it to Broadway is no longer just a dream. It has transitioned into a goal. Something that I am committed to working on everyday to achieve. This goal, much like Miss Texas is one that requires dedication and skill. Luckily for me these two goals compliment each other, and working on one will only further prepare me for the other.

Miss America 2011

I have just returned from a fantastically fun time in Las Vegas for the Miss America 2011 competition! It was awesome to watch our own Miss Texas, Ashley Melnick, light up the stage. This year was the 90th anniversary for the Miss America Organization, and achieved another interesting landmark. Miss America 2011 was the largest gathering of Miss America's ever, boasting over 47 former titleholders in one place.

Houston Christmas Eve Super Feast

One appearance I have had the pleasure of attending since I was 14, is the Houston Christmas Eve Super Feast. This is a huge event, where volunteers from all across Houston come together to serve a nice Christmas dinner to those in need. This event is particularly special because we have an opportunity to not only serve food, but to get to know some of the children waiting in line as we sign autographs.

My favorite story from this years event stars a little girl, much like most of the other girls I had seen that day. She comes running up to me with extreme excitement in her eyes, and I knew she was going to be a very special little girl. She asks me,. "Are you a superstar?" Not really sure how to answer this question I responded with a question, "Well I am a queen, does that make me a superstar?" And without missing a beat she said, "Of course! I knew it! You ARE a superstar." But then I asked her if she was a superstar too, and she bowed her head slightly and replied that she was not a superstar just a normal girl. I looked her in the eyes and said, "You look like a superstar to me! Definitely a superstar." The biggest smile spread across her face and as she ran off I heard her say, "You are RIGHT! I am a superstar!"

I want to thank Duc Nugyen for setting this event up every year. Although you couldn't be there with us this year we love you and appreciate everything you do! THANKS!

Plano Children's Christmas Party

The closer it gets to Christmas, the more appearance opportunities seem to come up. One of those unique opportunities was a Christmas Party for those less fortunate to have Christmas, and it was in my new hometown of Plano! There were all sorts of activities for the children to do, including going to see Santa Claus! The attending titleholders helped Santa bring out toys for the kids. The joy on their faces when they received their Christmas gift was more than I could ever ask for. I'm glad there are opportunities like this for Miss America titleholders to be a part of!
